Winton's writing loses none of it's eloquence when he writes for children. A wise exploration of the difference between the acquisition of information and the quest for knowledge, Tim Winton's gem-like ecological fable will warm the hearts of his fans. I picked this up as it's part of the Penguin Australian Children's Classics series which I adore and even though I had not actually heard of this particular Tim Winton book before, it is so deserving as being part of this collection. Its brief enough to be read in an afternoon, but deep and wise enough to stay with you a thousand afternoons after. The people I write for pay me in plenty of gigantic cheques. The conservation message is at the heart of the story, as Abel grows up, leaves to get an education in the school system, and returns to the bay, determined to protect what he can. Abel screamed in his snorkel and pushed hard off the bottom but the big blue shadow suddenly had him by the hand.

Eugene: Mr Winton, do you personally enjoy being an author? There is a movie adaptation being released soon, I can't wait to watch it, the cast looks pretty good: Eric Bana, Radha Mitchell, Mia Wasikowska. For me, the best books for kids are those that are also enjoyable for adults to read. Winton is always at his best when there's water involved. This book constantly explores sustainability as Abel and his mother are striving to protect the environment. It was magnificent; the most beautiful thing Abel had ever seen. Sometimes during the evenings he watched the kangaroos — I wanted to join him. Fishing, planting, the land, the water….

So yeah, I think this would be the main similarity between Blueback and I. The blue line where blue meets blue hypnotizes those lucky enough to witness such a natural spectacle, that of water and sky merging together in infinite horizon. It's not a typical children's book, reading more like a fairytale than anything else with it's jaw droppingly beautiful prose, even when describing tragedy and pain. It is now 2017 and I have just reread this gem for the umpteenth time. They fish, and grow fruit and vegetables. On the surface it's the story about a boy and a fish, while deeper down it's about respect for our environment, the importance of keeping what matters in sight and the love of family. Down through the centuries the Jackson family had always earned their living from the sea, from the old days of whaling and fishing, to the modern times of abalone harvesting.

About Tim Winton
I've been everywhere, I've studied, I've given lectures, become a bigshot. Abel figured his mother knew all the secrets of the sea…. The catch was we had to do activities as well so that's probably why i didn't enjoy this book as much as i would've. This is my first Tim Winton book, and based on my enjoyment of this novella, I'll be looking for more from him. After this I am left thinking he is a wise storyteller. It's also about nature, human relationships, and ecology.

Abel is looking for the answer to the sea, and has devoted his life to finding out what this could be. For those patient and mature enough to enjoy a gentle tale. She grows vegetables and eats fish.
