Has to be something wrong here. In addition to showing what Escalante himself set out to accomplish, the movie makes the point that teachers do their best to teach, but are often put in nearly impossible settings. Escalante endures hardships and insults to try and save the students and the school. One of the most poignant scenes in the film is when Olmos is giving Phillips all of his books, trying to help the guy maintain a rep as well as stay focused on his class work.
