All things considered i think that Roumain took the political aspects of his novel a step to far; and by doing so seriously detracted from the work. This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers. The translators, Langston Hughes and Mercer Cook, rather than trying to find suitable English equivalents or having the characters speak some kind of rural American dialect as a substitute, has them speaking standard English.

I would recommend reading this book to anyone who likes to read and is ok with taking time to understand things. When you first open the book, Roumain provides a detailed account of the poverty the drought has caused. He reunites with his family and finds a countryside ravaged by long periods of drought and his own family torn apart by old feuds. A dispute based on murder is dividing the community. He is well aware that a canal will have to be built and this will require the participation of all the village and that his main task is to reconcile the warring families. But it is also the reader who gives these works life because without the readers, literature from such remote places in the world like the Caribbean for example could not have the audience that it greatly deserves.
Mark speaks about different divisions of communist and literature. The usual composition of a jacques Cousteau's program was: identification of problem, a hypothesis for the problem solution, and then action, live solution of the problem. If you want to understand the current environmental and social situation in Haiti this book is a big step forward. . Although i would not designate this novel as one of the best works from Haiti that i have read it is decent in its own respects. I found the book fascinating. This book was a nice quick read, interesting and moving. I also did not understand some things about their culture at first. I really enjoyed it and strongly connected with the mother and father in the story, and with the sense of struggle, and putting aside grievances for the good of the community as a whole. One man, and one man alone, demonstrated to us the strength of his character when he fought to mend the familial ties that had been severed in his community of Fonds Rouge, Haiti due to a major misunderstanding that resulted in the death of two important community leaders.

Marxist Criticism is based on the economic and cultural theory of Karl Marx, who is considered the founder of communism Davidson. All it shows is the author's own self-interest and his distorted views of women, poverty, and even the religion of his country. I would definitely recommend this as a novel exploring the application of mutual aid and organizing outside the work place. However, I found it to be extremely sexist - which is partly due to its context, but it was just ridiculous - as well as fairly predictable. .
