What an outstanding play! The Fair Housing Act is one of the great legislative achievements of the civil rights era. Lorraine balanced the heart-wrenching and light-hearted scenes with excellence. Instead, she wants to set aside money for Beneatha's college and use the rest to put a down payment on a house. Though Ruth is content with their lot, Walter is not and desperately wishes to become wealthy. The epigraph is a way for Hansberry to point to both the universal nature of her play â everyone has dreams â and its particular nature â black Americans have been forced to defer their dreams more than others. That material adds greatly to the experience of her vision, and doesn't come through as such at all in a production.
