Arab mujahedin conduct regular raids the Nuba mountains of Sudan, and Mende Nazer was about 12 years old when she was captured in one such raid, in 1994. But seven years after she was seized and sold into slavery, she was sent to work for another master—a diplomat working in the United Kingdom. The publicity given to her story, however, prevents her from returning to Sudan and to her family. Most realized as Frederick Douglass did that the odds against a successful revolt were very high, and bitter experience had shown them that the usual outcome was death to the rebels. After reading the book, I feel that I have a good grasp on the answer to the different questions, and will answer them now. The book draws you into Nazer's story and you almost instantly want to know more about her and the outcome of the ordeals she faced. This story was difficult to read , yet I read on and envisioned and felt the horror this one girl went through and just knowing that there are many more children and adults out there still fighting for freedom. At the age of twelve or thirteen the Nuba people do not keep records of birth dates , Nazer was abducted during a raid on her village. They had gone outside to see a huge, orange glow on the horizon.
