Oliver Twist is a novel written by Charles Dickens, first published in serial form in 1837. The story follows the life of the titular character, Oliver, who is an orphan born in a workhouse in England.
At the beginning of the story, Oliver is a young boy living in the workhouse, where he is treated poorly and barely given enough to eat. Despite this, he is a kind and innocent child who always tries to do the right thing. Eventually, Oliver's luck begins to change when he is chosen to be apprenticed to a local chimney sweep. However, the sweep is abusive and Oliver is forced to run away.
After running away, Oliver finds himself on the streets of London, where he is taken in by a group of thieves and pickpockets led by a man named Fagin. Fagin teaches Oliver the ways of crime and tries to get him to join his gang. Despite his initial reluctance, Oliver is eventually forced to go along with Fagin's plan in order to survive.
As the story progresses, Oliver becomes more and more entangled in the world of crime, but he never loses his sense of morality and compassion.
