First one is Rajan and the later is Mani. His other friends include Somu, Samuel, and Sankar. My favourite story was Engine Trouble; I really liked and may use An Astrologer's Day, The Missing Mail, Lawley Road, God and the Cobbler, and Hungr These stories feel universal; I am uncomfortably aware that this comment - from a white reader, on a non-white author's work - may smack of insensitivity to difference, but they feel universal the way greatest Russian literature does; they present human weaknesses and imperfection in a humorous, but, more frequently, objective and non-judgmental way.

He has a disciplinarian father,who is lawyer and is strict about his studies and swami afraids of him. One night, a petty thief manages to steal ornaments and make away with his booty and Attila follows him quietly all throughout thinking him to be a casual guest. I love this book and would read this again and again. The title of the book aptly depicts the meaning as the stories are all about the lifestyle in Malgudi. In 1980, Narayan was nominated to the Swami and Friends.

A concerning postman takes a crucial decision on delivering a telegram at the risk of loosing his job, a young boy is left with an old snake when his father leaves him. The accountant always says he liked it. K Narayan mentioned, each story was inspired by the lives of the Indian people. Life from the perspective of the common people is showcased in all its vivid detail and that era of Indian life captured in print for all time to come in this book of short stories.
