Fudge, a "professional student" who has been at Columbus for six years so far, becomes friendly with Malik and challenges his views about race and politics in America. Rapaport plays a big, confused kid who looks like a rabbit caught inheadlights, and Hauser, with his cynical charm and insinuating drawl, is like asnake-charmer. I recognize that it's very messy in how it goes back and forth between its massive ensemble cast, and that some characters could have been fleshed out better than others, but it's still to me an incredibly compelling analysis of college life that can be expanded to be America itself in a microcosm. It shows Billy's own confusion, and theway booze contributes to it. To be fair, "Higher Learning" came out in the midst of one of the most liberal decades in the history of this country: the 1990's. Higher Learning holds a 45% rating on Higher Learning 's goals; unfortunately, writer-director John Singleton too often struggles to fit his themes within a consistently engaging story.

In an opening scene, when the blackfreshman gets on an elevator with the young white student, she instinctivelyclutches her purse tighter. Who would've believed it. Retrieved February 1, 2022. The movie follows a group of students at Columbus University as they adjust to college life with apparently physcotic results. In a closing scene, we see them able to talk witheach other in the aftermath of a campus tragedy.
Systemic racism, white supremacy, gun violence, rape on college campuses, the uselessness and outright cruelty of police: the subjects it tackles are ripped straight from today's headlines and, frankly, the only reason that feels surprising to me is because I turned 3 the year Higher Learning came out. They all have their own problems, such as finance, harrassment, personal safety, and self doubt. The premise of this "film" was so absurd, we laughed about it 25 years ago. The New York Times. It isnot safe to walk the campus grounds after dark.
It is absurd and unrealistic. Remy moves out and gets a new roommate David, who is Jewish. Looking through the eyes of the incoming freshmen, we go through theprocess of moving in, meeting roommates, taking the first classes, andsocializing. Yet Remy, intimidated by Malik, considers violence to be inevitable and therefore the only answer. That's how far teh intellectual dialogue in America has devolved. This film falls into much the same trap.

Remy tearfully apologizes for all that he has done and then turns his gun on himself before Sergeant Bradley can stop him, and commits suicide. I wouldn't say this is the WORST movie I've ever seen, but it sure is close. And it sets up a subplot, as the shattered Kristenis befriended by Taryn Taryndoesn't "recruit" Kristen exactly, although she has her eye on her. Hehandles the subplot involving the neo-Nazis especially effectively; skinheadslend themselves to parody, but in Cole Hauser and Michael Rapaport, Singletonhas cast two effective actors who bring a chilling plausibility to their roles. Do the Right Thing is a definite influence, and while that film's style occasionally goes broad, its characters and conflicts never do.

Scott, preaching his racist beliefs, gradually convinces the troubled Remy that "the white man is endangered". Students, already under pressure to perform in the classroom, on the track, or in front of their friends, are strained to the breaking point by prejudice, inexperience, and misunderstanding. Early in the film, a black freshman is givena tour of the turfs staked out by various racial groups: "There'sChinatown. He tries to confront every issue at once and I think it teeters between Crash and Do the Right Thing. Malik, recruited to the campus as a potentialtrack star, feels himself out of depth in Phipps' class and tries to play theblack card, but Phipps isn't playing: He would not be doing Malik a favor, heexplains, by holding him to a lower standard. Kristen joins Taryn's student group on harmony between different races and cliques, eventually opening up to her about her rape.
