Willy is unfortunately the only thing he really cares about is a lie and his biggest fear of failing his sons but most importantly himself. Names Names, and the lack of them, mean a great deal in Ragtime—though only one main character actually gets a full name. Mother grows enamored with the concept of the motion picture and the perspective it affords on daily life. She often feels guilt over her treatment of her brother, referred to in the novel as Mother's Younger Brother. American musicians, instead of investigating ragtime, attempt to ignore it, or dismiss it with a contemptuous word. As such, he finds it difficult to come to terms with the changes he witnesses in the Progressive Era. Even Mother's Younger Brother gets in the act.
The novel represents characters who provoke change Coalhouse , characters who accept change Mother and Tateh , and characters who resist change Father. While Father seems to experience a profound sense of immorality in deriving pleasure from sex, Mother exalts in her growing awareness of her sexuality. In Ragtime, we are presented with many characters who face the trials of life as they become themselves. He soon demonstrates his entrepreneurial abilities through the sale of the movie books he has designed and exhibits a more profound understanding of how to succeed in a capitalist system. He believes friendship and cooperation between whites and blacks is essential to the success of blacks in America. Subsequently, he travels all around the United States and then to Mexico, where he becomes involved in several revolutionary campaigns and where he eventually dies. When Tateh walks the streets of Madison and Fifth Avenues, his heart is "outraged" 3. It only takes a small aspect of kindness for the children to feel loved again, but once he creates a constant situation involving money and alcohol the children change their minds on their view of their father. The different characters in Ragtime represent different responses to change - from encouraging change to responding to it, and from resisting change to accepting it.

When he attends the ballgame with his son, he can only compare these games, which have many immigrant players, to his own Harvard games twenty years earlier. He has gone through so much to not have found his purpose for living and that is why he ends up dead by the end of the book. Coalhouse's righteous anger notwithstanding, society remembers him as a violent maniac and killer.
Coalhouse Coalhouse's Walker, Jr. Younger Brother At the opening of the novel, Younger Brother is a depressed, aimless young man who ties the entire value of his life to his relationship with Evelyn Nesbit. After his return from his trip to the Arctic, he feels alienated from his family and his environment; this feeling will never entirely disappear. Ragtime not only tells the individual struggles of each character throughout the novel but also shows how each character is affected by another. He represents the next generation of Americans. Father's character plays an allegorical role in the novel, as he represents the traditional norms of late nineteenth century America. A series of racially motivated hate crimes serves to transform Coalhouse into a violent activist for black rights, thus setting him up for a climactic showdown with his nemesis, Chief Willie Conklin. For example, Willy has dug a hole so deep for himself he finds it harder to turn things around. When Father returns, Mother realizes she is no longer in love with him. Emotionally, Tateh begins to see the toll life in New York has taken on him. Another failure for which he feels guilty is the dysfunction within his family.
