We must bow to Grimm in matters etymological. A small flute-voice of infinite wail speaks there, into our very heart of hearts. Shakespeare may well be placed on a pedestal at par with Homer and Dante. You are raised high above it, to large free scope of vision; but you too are not yet at the top. So much of truth, only under an ancient obsolete vesture, but the spirit of it still true, do I find in the Paganism of old nations. Dante's painting is not graphic only, brief, true, and of a vividness as of fire in dark night; taken on the wider scale, it is every way noble, and the outcome of a great soul.
It could do no good, at present, to speak much about this; but it is a pity for every one of us if we do not know it, live ever in the knowledge of it.
