With most of the novels I read, I tend to focus on particular authors I may come away satisfied that the book was "a good read" - interesting story, suspense in the plot and hard to figure "who done it" - but, after a while the characters fade. I loved the characters and the writing made me feel as if I was there. When Cotton tells Lou something, she snaps at him and says something to the effect of "I can't look back anymore. It's on the level of "To Kill a Mockingbird".
The whole storyline is weak, but the ending is almost fantastically ridiculous. There are a lot of books which make you feel things- sometimes happy, sad the other times, and much more. For Lou, her family's financial struggles are invisible to her. All through the book there was a deep sense of sadness and tragedy but you can't help but cheer for the characters. Life is hard was a lesson Lou and Oz had to learn early.
