India is a country with a rich history and a significant role in international affairs. As a member of the United Nations, India has played an active role in the organization and its various bodies, including the United Nations Security Council (UNSC).
The UNSC is a key body within the United Nations, responsible for maintaining international peace and security. It is composed of 15 member states, 5 of which are permanent members with veto power (China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States) and 10 of which are elected for two-year terms. India has long sought a permanent seat on the UNSC, as it believes that its size, population, and economic and military power entitle it to a greater say in international decision-making.
India has served as a non-permanent member of the UNSC on several occasions, most recently in 2021-2022. During its tenure, India has played an active role in addressing a range of global challenges, including peacekeeping, counter-terrorism, disarmament, and sustainable development. It has also worked to promote regional stability and security, particularly in its own neighborhood.
India's efforts to secure a permanent seat on the UNSC have been supported by a number of countries, including the United States. However, the process of expanding the permanent membership of the UNSC is complex and requires the approval of all current permanent members, which has proven difficult to achieve.
Despite the challenges, India remains committed to playing a greater role in international affairs and continues to advocate for its inclusion as a permanent member of the UNSC.
