"Was It a Dream?" is a short story written by Guy de Maupassant in 1887. The story follows the narrator, a young man named Paul, who is struggling to come to terms with the death of his beloved wife, Marie.
At the beginning of the story, Paul is deeply grief-stricken and unable to accept the fact that Marie is gone. He spends his days locked in his room, staring at her portrait and reliving their happy memories together. One night, as he falls asleep, he has a vivid dream in which Marie appears to him and tells him that she is not really dead. She explains that she has simply gone away for a little while and that she will return to him soon.
Paul is overjoyed by this news and eagerly waits for Marie to come back to him. However, as the days go by, he begins to doubt the reality of his dream. He begins to wonder if it was just a figment of his imagination, brought on by his intense grief and longing for Marie.
Despite his doubts, Paul remains hopeful that Marie will return to him and spends his days waiting patiently for her. However, as time passes, he comes to the realization that Marie is truly gone and that his dream was just a way for his mind to cope with the pain of her loss.
