Benjamin, having been hesitant to answer the question up to now, finally tells his son: while fighting in the British Army, he and several other soldiers discovered French soldiers committing an atrocity against British colonists. Victory could also be won by forcing the opposing side to break their own formation, which in the Battle of Camden was achieved through a bayonet charge that the American forces were unprepared for, and which caused them to panic and scatter. His presence only rounds out the number of the Martin children to seven. Unlike the other six children, he has no scenes where he is on center stage.

Unsure if he is dead or not, Gabriel approaches the body in an attempt to stab him, only to have Tavington rise up and stab Gabriel himself before fleeing. I have no characters, storyline or dialogue that spring from my imagination. He is shot and killed by Tavington when he protests against Gabriel's arrest. Martin,I enjoyed Bound for Gold first, then The Lincoln Letter. He could easily have been removed from the story with no effect beyond changes to a couple of dialogue references. Despite being an archnemesis to protagonist Benjamin Martin, Tavington has quite a lot in common with him. I am not a fan of Lady Mary. Long ago, his late father squandered the family fortune, along with Tavington's inheritance.

The black characters in The Patriot are portrayed as freed men and women who earn a living by working Benjamin Martin's land, and who love his family and are treated like family themselves. Francis Marion appears to have been the primary influence, since many details of Benjamin's character - including his role in the French and Indian War, his use of guerrilla warfare tactics, his gathering and leadership of militiamen, and his use of ambushes to gather intelligence - are lifted straight from Marion's biography. Gabriel hears word of Tavington's slaughter and furiously attacks him and his men at their encampment. Martin at one point killed 20 British soldiers with his sons because his other son was killed by their commander. I would follow the passage of the treasure through time.
