Nonetheless, it works for the story the film tells of a general honoring the dying wish of the leader he served. Livius in The Fall of the Roman Empire and Maximus in Gladiator kill Commodus in single combat, Livius to save Lucilla and Maximus to avenge the murder of his wife and son, and both do it for the greater good of Rome. It has been credited with reinventing the Gladiator's visuals, style, and tone with varying degrees of success.
