The Hunger Games is a 2012 science fiction action film based on the 2008 novel of the same name by Suzanne Collins. The film, directed by Gary Ross, stars Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss Everdeen, a young woman who is selected to participate in the Hunger Games, a brutal, government-sanctioned competition in which 24 teenagers from the dystopian nation of Panem are forced to fight to the death in a brutal arena.
The Hunger Games is set in a post-apocalyptic world in which the former United States has been divided into 13 districts, each controlled by the tyrannical Capitol. As punishment for a past rebellion, the Capitol requires each district to send one boy and one girl between the ages of 12 and 18 to participate in the Hunger Games, a brutal contest in which the young people are forced to fight to the death in a controlled arena.
Katniss, a 16-year-old girl from District 12, volunteers to take her younger sister's place in the Hunger Games when her sister is chosen by lottery. Along with her fellow tribute, Peeta Mellark, Katniss is sent to the Capitol to train for the games and meet the other tributes.
As the Hunger Games begin, Katniss and Peeta are forced to fight for their lives against the other tributes, all of whom are determined to kill them. Despite the odds against them, Katniss and Peeta form a bond and begin to strategize together in order to survive.
Throughout the film, Katniss struggles with her own emotions and loyalty to her family, friends, and fellow tributes. She must also navigate the complicated political landscape of the Hunger Games, trying to outmaneuver the Capitol and the other tributes while still trying to stay true to her own values.

First 'Hunger Games': What Happened?
