A part-time hobby soon blossomed into a career when he discovered he really loved writing about movies, TV and video games; he even arguably had a little bit of talent for it. As a result, the birds became a reminder of the government's failure. Katniss kills the other tribute, and when Rue dies, she covers her body in flowers. Pollux, a member of the squad who spent five years working as a slave in the sewers, becomes their guide. After the explosion, Katniss sees a girl running toward the area of greatest damage, trying to help the injured.

Together, they write a book to preserve the memory of those who died. In District 8, Katniss meets Commander Paylor and visits the wounded in a makeshift hospital. Squad 451 moves forward through the Capitol with Katniss in the lead. His only goal is to kill her. In the ensuing urban warfare, many of Katniss's comrades, including Finnick, are killed. After watching this interview, many of the rebel leaders, including Coin, want Peeta to be tried for war crimes. Peeta succeeds at both goals for a time, protecting Katniss and helping her beat the Capitol at its own game.
