Count Lev Nikolayevich Tolstoy, more commonly known as Leo Tolstoy, was a Russian novelist, writer, and philosopher whose works, including War and Peace and Anna Karenina, are considered some of the greatest in world literature. Born in 1828 into a noble family, Tolstoy was educated at home and later attended Kazan University, where he studied law and Oriental languages.
Tolstoy's early life was marked by a series of personal tragedies, including the deaths of his mother and brother, as well as his own near-death experience in a hunting accident. These experiences, combined with his disillusionment with the Russian aristocracy and his exposure to the suffering of the Russian people, had a profound effect on his worldview and shaped his later writings.
