This book is just horrible and cruel. Additionally, they are at a loss with their own relationship with each other. Therefore, despite the dated nature of the setting, the story itself is not: two bored, alienated teenagers scam a lonely old person, although they don't do it to be mean but just to have fun. But, even if it didn't "speak to me", I remembered enough of the story that I wanted to read it again. They get little attention or affection from their own families, and so resort to stupid stunts for fun.

It could be said that this book is one about the undying immaturity of youth forced to grow up too fast, or that it's about the value and fragility in the relationships that we form with others. At the party, someone took the skates and used them, making Lorraine very upset because she treasured those rollerskates from the Pigman because nobody else did stuff like that for her. Lorraine only lives with her mother, due to her father leaving them a long time ago. The next time Lorraine and John do to Mr. Pignati teaches John and Lorraine a game in which they must determine who's to blame for a fictional murder, and they learn what their answers say about themselves. John tells the reader that someone named Lorraine has told him to write this all down because she's had a "miserable look on her face" ever since the Pigman died. I was about their age in the time this tale is set I graduated from high school in 1970 , and I can testify that they're thoroughly believable teens for that time and place, though my personal traits and experiences didn't identically mirror theirs.
