What a mixed metaphor. The Peasants' Revolt and its aftermath from the viewpoint of a dog. We find out Rufus is older though we never find out how old - the dog witnesses Rufus telling Comfort the story of his life and how they met and we find out Rufus is at least twice Comfort's age. My friend,Kathy Bruce, sent me the above link. She has got eleven puppies but the story just brings up two of them. So says the old hunting dog who narrates this unforgettable tale. The Snow Spider, first of the Magician books, won the second annual Nestlé Smarties Book Prize and the 1987 Tir na n-Og Award as the year's best originally English-language book with an authentic Welsh background. Although I state that this could be shared with KS2, I only mean Year 6 and even then the most mature and reflective of readers. The dog has no name, other than, "the old dog", which she is referred to throughout the story. Just an excellent, excellent read.

It has the unusual twist of being narrated by a dog, but in a realistic historical context which I've not seen before - the time of Wat Tyler and the Peasants' Revolt. It describes the relationship between mother and child, the feelings about giving breed, about separation and about death, both from a human and an animal perspective.
The story is harsh but should appeal to a young audience. Of course, Rufus and Comfort find their house has been taken and move in with Ede, who has been starving herself to take care of the children. Categories: For readers aged: 9+. A perfect class read for a KS2 group looking at this period in history, or just as an end-of-the-day read, with short chapters, an animal narrator will always go down well, and lots of discussion to come from this. She died when she was 53 years old--my age now.

Jenny Nimmo is a British author of children's books, including fantasy and adventure novels, chapter books, and picture books. The first time of her life she lived with her mother and father abroad but she came back to England and joined her father when he was hunting. Will it turn out happily after like every fairy tale about a medieval world? I heard about her through a book that I was reading by Philip Pullman on the topics of writing and fiction. I couldn't wait to get a copy of "Fire, Bed, and Bone," and finally found a used copy one online. I don't so much love books about dogs, let alone from the dog's perspective. What I learned from this book is the thing that keeps you going is family and love.

The story is seen through the eyes of a dog and that became a large stumbling block for me since I can barely r Written in 1997 this book didn't get much attention in the US. It brings to light how much we are close to our own wild sides yet at the same time that we will never escape the true civilizing hand that we have formed around ourselves. Students who may not usually be drawn to historical fiction should enjoy this novel as well as those who love a good dog story. I'm interested in the period of history in which it is set so I figured it could provide an entertaining couple of hours. She returns to collect Fleabane, along with the help of a large black cur, and the three of them live as ferals for a while but the dog is not wild, and returns eventually to her human family, with Fleabane having gone to another family. Although slanted for the young adult audience any animal loving adult fan of historical fiction should find this book set during the time of the Peasant Revolt in Medieval England enjoyable to read as well. Your master was a fool, old dog.
The author did a lovely job of writing from the perspective of a hunting dog in the 14th century. The soldiers captured Rufus and hung him on a rope, so he suffered and died. The author Henrietta Branford lived between 1946 and 1999. It was about Rufus and Comfort they are husband and wife, they get captured by soldiers because they are believed to be assisting the peasant of revolt. Accessories such as CD, codes, toys, may not be included. It is a short, dramatic read that children will be immediately invested in, but be aware that the subject is violent and there are scenes that will upset some, so do read ahead. The story is gritty and horribly exciting with truly shocking moments.
I would recommend it highly for classroom use in studying this specific event. I appreciate the unusual perspective the dog's and the realistic portrayal of life in England in the 14th century. I am always looking for kids' books that are not what everyone else is reading and not what is in the bookstores now. It was nice to read it again, in sight of the New Forest where the author was from , and to be able to compare it, favourably, to the works of Ken Follett, Conn Iggulden, and Bernard Cornwell. We believe you will be completely satisfied with our quick and reliable service. It's for kids so any criticisms I can make would probably be unfair. Although history is never known for being clean, especially around this timeframe it may not be a good idea for younger readers than it is for slightly older ones. The series is set in England just before, during, and after World War I. Both of these things colour her authorship. Just an excellent, excellent read.
