The figures of the tourist party and gardener may have been added by another artist working in collaboration with Turner. The floor was restored to its medieval level and covered in a smooth lawn to improve accessibility. His poem, Tintern Abbey 1798 revealed the complex historical, political and emotional associations the ruin had for people at the time. That is how its decay started in 1536. The vines and ivy entangling the ruined church remained untouched.
