Johnny was the only one who could penetrate the hard shell that Dally had created for himself. If it had been me, or Two-Bit, or Soda or Steve, or anyone but Johnny, Dally would have flattened him without a moment's hesitation. After Johnny dies Dally robs a store and knows what is going to happen to him. Soda said to Steve, "Easy buddy, easy. Although Johnny was a hero, he was one to the people closest to him, by treating them with kindness and wise words that made an impact on them.

Events: After the Johnny Cade killing a soc incident, it was informed that Dallas Winston helped Ponyboy Curtis and Johnny escape and send them to an abandoned church. Dally, on the other hand, has a dangerous history of being in urban gangs and living a life independently of others, so his ability to survive means he knows something about how to look after himself. On the way home, Pony falls asleep in the car and end up sleeping until the morning when Two-bit and Steve came over. The way it is resolved is that they don 't follow through on turning themselves into the police because johnny got hurt. This prompted the police to arrive, and after witnessing the large gun that he had, he was shot down by the police.
