The Republic of Gilead is a fictional dystopian society described in Margaret Atwood's 1985 novel "The Handmaid's Tale." Set in the near future, the Republic of Gilead is located in what used to be the United States, but has been transformed into a theocracy following a military coup.
In Gilead, society is highly stratified and women have very few rights. The ruling class, known as the Commanders, hold all political power and control the economy. Women are divided into strict social classes based on their perceived usefulness to the state. The highest class is made up of the Wives of the Commanders, followed by the Handmaids, who are fertile women chosen to bear children for the Wives and Commanders. The lowest class is made up of the Unwomen, who are sterile, elderly, or otherwise deemed undesirable by the state.
The Republic of Gilead is a totalitarian society that controls every aspect of people's lives. The state uses propaganda, censorship, and strict rules to maintain control over the population. Personal relationships and expressions of affection are discouraged, and any form of dissent is brutally suppressed.
One of the most disturbing aspects of the Republic of Gilead is its use of reproductive control as a means of maintaining power. Handmaids are subjected to ritualized rape by their male "owners" in the hopes of conceiving a child. If they fail to produce a child, they are either reassigned to another Commander or sent to work camps as Unwomen.
The Republic of Gilead is a cautionary tale about the dangers of extremism and the importance of preserving civil liberties. It serves as a warning about the dangers of allowing a small group of people to wield too much power and control over society.
