Mankiller was a Cherokee chief who made great strides in improving the lives of her people during her time in office. Born in 1945, she was the first woman to be elected as the principal chief of the Cherokee Nation, a position she held from 1985 to 1995.
Mankiller was a strong and determined leader who worked tirelessly to address the many challenges facing the Cherokee Nation. One of her top priorities was improving the economic situation of her people. Under her leadership, the Cherokee Nation developed a number of successful business ventures, including a casino and a telecommunications company. These efforts not only provided much-needed income for the tribe, but also helped to create jobs and stimulate economic growth within the community.
In addition to her work on economic development, Mankiller also focused on improving the health and well-being of the Cherokee Nation. She established a number of health clinics and programs, including a cancer screening program and a diabetes prevention initiative. These efforts helped to reduce the high rates of illness and disease that were prevalent within the Cherokee community.

Retrieved August 7, 2018. She took college courses at night while working during the day as a coordinator of Indian programs at the Oakland public schools. To obtain the money needed for basic necessities, Mankiller's parents and older siblings used to go out and cut timber to sell as railroad ties. The respect she holds for John Ross is extremely high and gives credit to why blood quantum is a poor measure of "Indianess" and willingness to work for the tribe. This deprivation was the result of previous actions taken by the federal government in 1907 that ignored the Cherokee Constitution, dismantled the tribal government and divided their land into individual allotments. Her work focused on issues of education, employment and healthcare. The tale revolves around her own battle against devastating personal illnesses--including kidney disease and myasthenia gravis- -evokes praise and admiration for over coming her odyssey of life.
With this, the book itself was incredibly boring and a sludge to push through. Certainly the more traditional stance that I have heard most pravelent growing up. Her memoir traces Cherokee history as well as her own. I was only about ten years old during the years when Mankiller was developing herself into the activist and force she later became. Wilma Mankiller faced other physical ailments. Her story details the dawning of the Native American civil rights struggle and how the genesis of that movement mirrored her own search for meaning and balance as a woman of two cultures.

If you read some of the other reviews here on Goodreads you'll come across reasonable explanations for people feeling "eh" about the book, mainly that it's not that great of a memoir, more like a textbook, in some regards.

She was a consensus builder, working with the federal government to pilot a self-government agreement for the Cherokee Nation and with the Environmental Protection Agency. She recommended that the job center be housed in the financially insolvent motel, but initially the Tribal Council denied her permission. If you want to learn about Wilma Mankiller, then this is the book for you. Basically the book is a mix of autobiography, traditional tales, and a lengthy history of the Cherokee.

Chief Mankiller was the least violent individual on this planet, but she was a commander, comparable to a Four-Star General, for whom the word "no" did not exist, especially when confronted with a problem.
