If ever mortal painted an idea, that mortal was Roderick Usher. Suddenly, while Roderick is speaking, Madeline passes "slowly through a remote portion of the apartment" and disappears without ever having noticed the narrator's presence. I know not how it was — but, with the first glimpse of the building, a sense of insufferable gloom pervaded my spirit.
