Kalashri School of Arts
The name Kuchipudi denotes both the dance style that has come to prominence since the 50s and the tiny, remote village where it was born. Guru Bina Menon, a student of dance perfectionist "kalamandalam Natanam" Gopalakrishnan, had performed all over India and abroad at a very young age. It is closely related to Bharathanatyam of Tamil Nadu, which was originally called 'Dasiyattam'. The sculptures excavated in this area have crystallized into stone the effulgent grace of those women whose dance was an act of worship. Originated as the temple dance performed by Devadasis, it portrays feminine love in its myriad forms - carnal, devotional and maternal- with accent more on Lasya and Bhava. . Ms Menon, who had represented the state of Tamil Nadu in sports, gave up the idea of being an athlete to spend more time towards dancing and painting.

The rulers of the Satavahana dynasty were great patrons of art. And received appreciation from them. Bina Menon has done Arangetram for several of her students in Bharatanatyam , Mohiniyattam and Kuchipudi, wishes to continue teaching, choreographing and do dance shows and make this Art a part of all her students' lives in the years to come. Mohiniyattam is a dance form said to have originated in Kerala. She has choreographed a 2 hour off Broadway dance ballets on Ramayanam with 40 classical dancers, her other themes include Krishna Leela, the 5 elements, save the rain forests, several dance dramas, classical fusion with Irish, swing and Hip Hop dancers. Kuchipudi, little known outside a few villages skirting it, has no come to occupy a very significant place on the dance map of India, though it has yet to acquire the prestige and acceptability it fully deserves.
In 2006 the Jon corzine ,NJ gov's inaugural had the student of Kalashri School of Arts perform the opening act. New jersey's prestigious NJpac's very first Indian show was Kalashri School's "Tarolsavam" in 2000 the biggest ever star studded Malayalam tour show, in the USA with Bharat Mohanlal ,Jairam, shobana and several other stars under the direction of the most successful director Priyadarshan, the show was also presented at the Nassau coliseum arena in NY and at the Temple University arena in PA. Kalshri's senior students have were selected after an audition to perform for the Oscar Awards in 2009 during AR Rahman's award winning performance for the Slum dog Millionaire. She has given a creative and spiritual thought in the minds of 100s of youngsters in NY and NJ area. It was initially known as Sadir-attam court dance and also Dãsiattam performed by the daasis-the servants of God.
In its popular connotation, the name Bharat Nãtyam is understood in two ways: It is the dance nãtyam , that beautifully blends the three elements - 'Bha'-Bhãva from expressions , 'Ra'-Rãga from musical melody and 'Ta'-Tãla from rythm. Six miles away from it lies Srikakulam, the ancient capital of the Satavahana empire 2nd century BC. Yesudas, Bollywood's Kumar Sanu, Udith Nararayan. Kalashri students were the very first Indian dancers to perform at the Izod center for National Basketball Association ,Nets vs Miami Heat game. From the inscriptions found here, on the temples of Andhra Vishnu, which was the most sacred shrine of those days, it is evident that no fewer than 300 devadasis consecrated to the deity, received royal patronage. Senate president and former acting Gov of NJ Richard Codey who inaugurated her school's 11th Annual celebration, along with several other dignitaries have expressed her contribution and service to the community has helped the children and teens in understanding their background and stay occupied in a constructive and disciplined matter.
In the main items Cholkettu, Padavarnam and Padam, Mudras and facial expressions are more important than the rhythmic steps. Costumes and ornaments of Mohiniyattam have much in common with female characters of Koodiyattam and Kathakali. Bharat Nãtyam, the Indian Classical Dance from South India-Tamil Nadu, has been one of the oldest and the richest classical dance of India. The name 'Bharata' is after the great author of the treaties, "NATYA SHASTRA" an encyclopedia on Dance, Drama and Music. Meenakshi Sheshadri of Bollywood fame who is also a classical dance exponent has had her shows with Bina Menon and students of Kalashri School of Arts. . She has had the pleasure in providing the community with rich Indian culture and traditions.
