Someone claimed she had a "familiar," when in fact all she did was try to teach a runt pig to suckle so it would not die. Way back when, my younger sister said she was going to be reading a book that took place during the Salem Witch Trials. Or that one of the accused is Mary's mother.
Their word alone was enough to put people in jail and on trial for witchcraft. I had hoped that, if it was a book that I had retained this long, it would be more, rather than less, accurate. Of course, it's good to have a book from the point of view of a child at this time, but I could wish it was done a little better or at least that the historical figures in the book felt a little more three-dimensional. Most of all, she loves ships and would like to work on one, if it wouldn't be considered un-ladylike.
The book also gives a person a good idea of just how easily panic could overtake a group of people and cause them to do things that they might not otherwise actually consider doing, especially in a time when literacy was very low and there was no such thing as the "mass media" of today. Personally, I'd like to see this book used in class with note taking and discussions of motives and women's roles and the socio-religious-politics of the time. But along with other terrible events, they did indeed. It gave us a glimpse of the experience through the eyes a person who lived through it. Virginia, a widow relies on Mary to help her run the farm and her son Caleb is a shipyard's apprentice and a skilled craftsman. The beginning of this book is a little dull and the many characters become confusing to the reader.

I haven't read many non-fiction novels so it was it was a change. Mary Chase is unlike the other girls in Salem Town. This book is about the Salem Witch Trials of 1692.
I had remembered a few plot points but some I had completely forgotten and was surprised to read about. All in all, Beyond the Burning Time was solid MG historical fiction. Ultimately, Mary changes in the way she deals with people. Intenseness is also something I like in a book and in this book when Mary and Caleb are trying save there mother it shows that. Understandably, finding her mother is incredibly important for Mary.

Kathryn Lasky is the American author of many critically acclaimed books, including several Dear America books, several Royal Diaries books, 1984 Newbery Honor winning Sugaring Time, The Night Journey, and the Guardians of Ga'Hoole series. Told from the view-point of a twelve year old girl, it effortlessly portrays the confusion and madness of the time. The book is written at a sixth grade level, give or take, and it's alright as a book to get a child interested in the subject of the Salem witch trials, but it's highly inaccurate when it comes to actual historical events, which was a large letdown.
