Modernism and futurism are two artistic and cultural movements that emerged in the early 20th century and have had a significant impact on the art, architecture, literature, and culture of the 20th and 21st centuries.
Modernism, which emerged in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, was characterized by a rejection of traditional forms and a focus on innovation and progress. Modernist artists sought to break with the past and create something new, using novel techniques and forms to reflect the rapidly changing world around them. Modernist literature, for example, often featured stream-of-consciousness narration and nonlinear narratives, and modernist architecture was characterized by clean lines, functional design, and a lack of ornamentation.
Futurism, which emerged in Italy in the early 20th century, was a movement that celebrated the potential of technology and the future. Futurist artists were inspired by the speed and dynamism of the modern world, and sought to depict the future in their art. Futurist paintings often featured futuristic landscapes, machines, and fast-moving vehicles, and futurist literature often focused on themes of progress and the future.
Both modernism and futurism were reactions to the rapid technological and social changes of the time, and both movements sought to challenge traditional forms and create something new. However, while modernism was more focused on breaking with the past and creating something entirely new, futurism was more focused on celebrating and embracing the potential of the future.
