The author has a way of retelling the story in a descriptive way that it feels like retracing the steps. A scientist had just developed a way of testing body fluids for DNA that was reliable, and as the test was proven, the detectives on the case heard about it and had an idea. The book was first published in January 1st 2013 and the latest edition of the book was published in August 1st 2013 which eliminates all the known issues and printing errors. He's still a good writer, and this is a perfectly competent true crime book, but there's nothing that makes it feel like it isn't made of interchangeable parts.

So, this is not one of Wambaugh's better books. Wambaugh does the story justice by explaining how the police tried to push false stories on a suspect. Thus, some sections in the book are heartbreaking and hard to read. The title promises that the case was solved by DNA testing but that isn't quite true. Pursued by a relentless enemy, Hawkwood and Lawrence set off across the snow-bound Adirondack Mountains; the land the Iroquois call "The Hunting Grounds. As far as I can tell the only similarity between those two novels and this one is a sense of isolation and helplessness. The British detectives asked the male population of three villages to "voluntarily" submit to blood tests.

Despite knowing the outcome of the 1980's investigation into the murder of two teenage girls, Joseph Wambaugh manages to maintain tension in this true crime story. Sub-lieutenant Nick Everard could never have imagined the terror he would face as his destroyer races to launch its torpedoes into the blazing guns of a horizon obscured by dreadnoughts. Perhaps because it is based in England, I could relate to the streets of Nottingham more than to the streets of LA, and Wambaugh's writing carries the story without prejudice.

This case ended up being using DNA to help eliminate and solve the murder. The police banded together with other forces in the daunting task of finding clues, eyewitnesses, or anything that would shed light on these horrific murders. It's rote Wambaugh, the crimes, the local color, the sympathetic portraits of the police officers. Published in January 1st 2013 the book become immediate popular and critical acclaim in historical, historical fiction books.
