At Le Hollandais gourmet restaurant, every night is filled with opulence, decadence and gluttony. He makes Albert wait, while giving a beaten poor man immediate attention. Ultimately Spica learns of the affair, forcing Georgina to hide out at Michael's book depository. . Together with all the people that Spica wronged throughout the film, Georgina confronts her husband finally at the restaurant and forces him at gunpoint to eat a mouthful of Michael's cooked body. Right from the start the intense avant-garde style of my first Peter Greenaway film caught me off guard, and I would not recommend going into it blind. In her state of boredom she decides to do something about this appetite for a more fulfilling relationships.

Peter Greenaway's direction is dark and atmospheric and it adds so much to the film's story. The film's biggest imperfection is the slow pacing the film, which may displease some, but to those that want a riveting drama, then The Cook, The Thief, his wife and her lover is a very good drama worth seeing despite its limitations. . But when the cook, a thief, his wife and her lover all come together, they unleash a shocking torrent of sex, food, murder and revenge. Â Greenaway has no taboos in this film, whether it's what's being discussed at the dinner table, which most people would never speak about.

There's a scene where Albert ruins one of his wives dishes as a practical joke, when he's done pouring wine on the expensive meal the camera cuts to showing the hard work of the chef and kitchen, which represents the destructive path Albert has. He's also the only character to bring smart philosophy to the table, unlike Albert who just spits gibberish. Through out the film a young boy with blond hair, who looks like a Cherub, sings verses from Psalm 51, where sins are admitted and regretted and God is asked to wash them away, so everything will be white as snow. A moment that incoorporates the taboo and comedy elements is the gynecologist dinner table conversation. . .

 This film features on of the greatest pricks in cinema history, Albert. The only thing I really dislike about the film was the stupid singing, it pissed me off several times that I wanted to smash the actor. The vast kitchen, a liminal domain that seems as close to the outside as in, whose vaulted ceilings hum with the soft, masculine bass of the chorus cut through by the dishwasher's glassy soprano; green - fresh organic produce, but also a nexus of jealousy and bile. The set design was extraorinary, it's so beautiful and lavishing, so well profuse and placed. . . I adore watching Helen Mirren from ANY era, but particularly here, in between the young adulthood beauty she displayed in Michael Powell's 'Age of Consent', through the remarkably absurd and audacious 'Caligula', straight to the sophisticated and very dangerous gorgeousness displayed in 'The Comfort of Strangers'.

The film tells a well constructed story that is fairly simple, but is engaging enough to be entertained for two hours. Georgie's naughty bits are nicely related, aren't they, Georgie? Starring: Helen Mirren, Alan Howard, Michael Gambon, Tim Roth, Richard Bohringer Albert lectures his men and Georgina on the makings of a proper diet, making sure to grope her breasts and embarrass her as much as possible. Having previously watched Greenaway's 'Prospero's Books', basically from the same era, one definitely gets a sense of the auteur, of great visualizing prowess in the Welsh native. First of all, I love the lighting and costumes, and how the colour of the costume changes as the lighting changes. This attack, however, has the sensual danger of awakening the most primitive instincts of the human being. Albert surrounds himself with his arrogant sidekicks, but compared to him they're a set of nuns. The characters annoyed me greatly, I know that it's not meant to be convincing but as symbols, it still irritated me.

Outside Le Hollandaise, perpetual night, black for obscurity. It's great to see any dude who's mean to a beautiful woman get their comeuppance particularly the wea. This is a blistering drama with some standout performances, and it's in the cast that makes for a truly engaging experience. Despite their efforts to keep it a secret, however, Spica finds out about their trysts, and he plans to exact a terrible revenge. Conglomerating bizarre elements and a literally unbeatable sense of humor that abounds in cleverness and intellectualism, this groundbreaking story has obviously received a mixed balance of positive and negative reviews.
