Hard boiled police rough up their suspects in dimly lit interrogation rooms. He wants to locate femme fatale Daphne Monet who is fond of Easy's favorite jazz club. Easy Rawlins is a bit more educated than average Blacks, and actually owns his own home - small, but he loves it. By the end, I have no idea who wanted who for what, or why. Character development and atmospheric portrayal of late 1940's Los Angeles are much more important to this book than plot development. I ate with them and slept with them, and I killed enough blue-eyed young men to know that they were just as afraid to die as I was. His descriptions of neighborhoods and streets were well-known to me.

Of course, the book gives you a more detailed world and it was interesting to see the extended backstory of the characters and Easy's though process. . He avoids police intervention in the case since he's afraid of being framed for the violent crimes he's investigating. He spent much of it sitting behind a typewriter, but when he had the chance, he volunteered to go with Gen. I read it every morning for a couple days and it always felt like I was starting my day off right. People told stories of how you could eat fruit right off the trees and get enough work to retire one day.
He calls upon his war experience and his toughness to stay with the situation and not run away after he finds himself in over his head. Not wonderful but a fairly entertaining detective novel!
