All he does is play stupid, clueless, and ignorant. Murphy plays Jack McCall, a literary agent who never reads books, and maybe this is karmic revenge. TL;DR: It is a shame. Not that I blame the audience - but it seems as if the reputation of Eddie making bad films has put a seriously negative spin on what is actually a decent little film here. Now revealing this message would ruin a lot of things about this movie, so I can't tell you what it is. But near the end of the movie the story really stepped up and into character. The antics of this movie create non-stop comedy as Jack tries to keep his mouth shut. That turns out to be his redemption, he dies as the tree dies, but both are quickly reborn, a healthy tree and a healthy Jack, destined to be a better person. You pretty much know what's coming - that Murphy's character will resolve the issues which keep him from being happy. The premise is if he speaks leaves fall out of a tree and he dies. Such a waste and frankly, I'm rather tired of being disappointed when I go to the movies. You can take just so much of even Eddie Murphy making faces.
It is sad that much of his words are wasted, which gives Jack and the viewers a chance to reflect on what is truly important in life. The final verdict is that this movie may be appropriate for those 13 and older, but it all depends on your own family values. What Makes a Movie Great? I was entertained, there is a core of message there, of being true to yourself and those important to you, wife, children, parents, friends. The most obvious feature is, Jack notices quickly, for every word Jack says a leaf falls off. Eventually, Jack has to dig really deep and make every word count. Jack tries to break the curse by being a better person by giving food to the homeless, and donating some of his money to charity, but that plan fails. Eddie Murphy keeps trying and trying.
