One thing about it, though. I admire that Hinton crafted an ending here that was melancholy, and had one of the characters make a life-altering decision that appears to be divisive to readers. This shows that Bryon is starting to realize how the world really is, and that people may not who they really seem they are. He falls for Cathy and immediately is choosing her over Mark, his brother from another mother. Since his mom has to stay in bed for a month to recover from her operation, Bryon tries more earnestly to get a job. The ending broke my heart and threw out the pieces.

The characters are unlikable and I do remember not liking them even back when I was younger. I'd love to have a book about Mark. I think Mark was only dimly aware of that fact. There are strange inconsistencies in this book, but I wouldn't change anything about it since Ms. If I disliked Bryon at the start, I really hated him by the end.

Charlie realizes the boys are in trouble and attempts to save them. There's just no forward motion behind this book. He stays with Bryon all night, and the next day Mark takes him to the hospital.
She made no great effort to foreshadow events, yet everything fell into a logical line o Every bit as punching no pun intended as The Outsiders, but with a much darker ending. Bryon recalls the time when he seethed at the idea that Cathy had been attracted to Mark; now, he wonders what it would be like to feel that way your whole life. Bryon is curt and angry with her, saying that Cathy must be happy now that Mark is out of the way. I think there was some naivety on Hinton's part at work here, but I could be wrong. This is what you want: Charlie was never shot, Bryon married Cathy, and Mark cleans up his act and becomes a responsible citizen bc there are no permanently incarcerated convicts, nobody ever went from juvenile deliquent to habitual criminal, there are no jails bc people reform themselves. He was relieved that he was able to save his friends and get them back home. At the beginning of the book, he is on probation for hot-wiring and stealing cars.
What makes "That Was Then, This Is Now" a coming of age novel?
I understand his feelings and turmoil. After not stopping Mike went over and told them to stop. I mean, I didn't love what happened, but it felt so real and soul-crushing. Bryon and Mark are both teenagers whose lives drastically change after a series of unfortunate, tragic events. As well Smokey, who is original to Mark later appears as a hitchhiker, who has recently escaped from prison and killed multiple people. For one, he can now communicate with others using social media platforms like Twitter and Instagram.
In Tulsa, Oklahoma, in the late 1960s, 16-year-old Bryon Douglas lives with his mother and his foster brother and best friend, Mark Jennings. We were sure of ourselves, so sure we were the coolest things to hit town. One night, Bryon and Mark pick up a drunk Angela Shepard, now married, who reminisces with them. Maybe he will outgrow it someday, but right now it's important. Read this one before "The Outsiders" oops , but it really didn't matter that much.
Want to know the reason why it took me years to read it again? Bryon concludes by saying that he wishes he were a kid again, when he was sure of himself and had all the answers. See, everyone's talking about how the ending is wonderfully dark and hopeless and brave in its horror. But that was until Cathy came along. Mark and Bryan have been best friends all their lives. It's both far less influential and not nearly as good as The Outsiders, so just go ahead and read that instead of wasting your time here.
As the love between them dissipates, Bryon begins to revert to selfishness, lying to Cathy about the fact that he will call her and reverting to thinking only about himself. It's a superior effort, one that even extremely reluctant readers understand and enjoy. It's fun even reading that name! He lives with his mom and his best friend Mark, lives with him cause both of marks parents died. I understand his decisions not that I would've made the same ones.
I think Mark is gorgeous inside and outside, and fearless and clever and slightly twisted and dead sexy, and I think Bryon is a flighty, selfish, irrational dick. He forces Tex and Mason to drive him to the state line, holding them at gunpoint; he is killed soon after by the police. This is such an easy book to relate to. I didn't like this ending because of all the things Mark and Bryon been through Bryon goes and calls the cops on him. Do yourself a favor and skip the crap movie with, um, one of the Estevez brothers, I forget which one. Do yourself a favo I had aimed to read 40 books this year and this is my 140th so please believe me when I say I am PROUD of myself! Eventually, Bryon finds out that Mark is selling pills and calls the police on him which ends their friendship. Without Bryon's stabilizing influence, Mark begins acting out and gets into dealing drugs.

However, in the present day, ponyboy has a lot to offer. Bryon's transformation and moral development classify. The next few months pass in a blur. Its an amazing book. If you like a good coming of age story with a rather sad ending at least for a young adult book , then get at it. The thing that bothered me the most was the ending; it left me really dissastisfied.
