"A Child Called It" is a memoir written by Dave Pelzer, who tells the story of his childhood and the extreme abuse he suffered at the hands of his alcoholic mother. Pelzer was born in San Francisco in 1960, and from a young age, he experienced neglect and abuse from his mother. She would often beat him with belts, burn him with cigarettes, and force him to eat his own vomit. Pelzer was also subjected to extreme deprivation, being denied food, water, and medical care.
Despite the terrible conditions he lived in, Pelzer remained determined to survive and find a way out of his situation. He was eventually rescued by a schoolteacher who recognized the signs of abuse and contacted child protective services. Pelzer was taken out of his mother's custody and placed in foster care, where he received the love and support he needed to heal and thrive.
Pelzer's story is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit, and his determination to overcome the odds and find a better life. It is also a powerful reminder of the importance of speaking out against child abuse and seeking help when it is needed.
Pelzer's memoir has touched the hearts of millions of readers around the world and has inspired many to speak out about their own experiences with abuse. I totally agree with the author that what's worse than the abuser is the one who was supposed to save you as the one silently watching you suffer and not doing anything about it. The way the book is written is easy to read, but the subject is not of people that gets upsets by hard to read subjects. This can make their lives difficult and take a toll on their emotions. A Child Called βItβ Summary
This memoir is one heartbreaking read narrating in details about the physical and emotional abuse of Dave Pelzer ever since he was 7 years old. I've sat with this book on my desk for a couple weeks, unable to decide what I would write for a review. I loved this first book so much that I even continued on to the next book! Now, before anyone wants to crucify me, look at the facts: His family members were interviewed and stated that this was pure fantasy. This is packed full of description and action, but lacked the hindsight and explanations I wanted as a reader who isn't necessarily interested in the entire trilogy, so I wish it would have unpacked more of it in this single volume. I know it's the first part in a trilogy, but I doubt I'm going to read the other two books.
