"Pale Horse, Pale Rider" is a novella by Katherine Anne Porter, first published in 1939. It tells the story of a young woman named Miranda, who is a newspaper reporter in Denver during the influenza epidemic of 1918.

The story begins with Miranda falling ill with the flu and being taken to a hospital. There, she meets a soldier named Adam, who is also suffering from the flu. Despite their illness, the two form a bond and spend their time in the hospital talking and getting to know each other.

As the story progresses, it becomes clear that Adam is a deeply troubled man, haunted by the horrors he has witnessed in World War I. He confides in Miranda about his experiences and the psychological toll they have taken on him.

Despite their growing attachment to each other, Miranda and Adam's time together is cut short when Adam dies of the flu. Miranda is devastated by his death, but also feels a sense of liberation, as she is now free to move on and leave behind the pain and suffering of the past.

The story concludes with Miranda returning to work as a reporter, having gained a deeper understanding of the world and the fragility of life. She is now a changed person, and her experiences have made her more compassionate and understanding of others.

"Pale Horse, Pale Rider" is a poignant and thought-provoking tale of love, loss, and the human condition. It explores themes of mortality, the effects of war on the human psyche, and the power of human connection to provide hope and comfort in times of hardship. It is a powerful and moving work that is sure to leave a lasting impression on its readers.

Seal 2 brought war and violence to the earth. The end certainly has a kind of shock value in the best possible way, and the buildup instills a sense of lazy indifference, much as O'Connor will set you up so persistently in the mundane only to then demonstrate how fragile any stability in this world will necessarily be. No zombies here, no outlandish scenarios, just one woman's battle to survive a pandemic, while bodies are being covered with sheets all around her. Some, but not most, accounts list a fourth wave occurring late in 1919 and extending into 1920. She is a family legend that is held up to the young Miranda as the ideal woman. Porter was no stranger to these symptoms. I've also read some of her short stories in "Flowering Judas", and they were good as well.

Porter's Miranda shares a number of struggles with her author: a young woman writer working freelance and living on a shoestring, trying to honestly dig into the arts and at the same time turn out her heart's inner sediments for her sometime-lover Adam, a reluctant soldier. Instead, she starts to feel funny and the next thing she knows, she's in the sick ward with the dead and the dying, watching the randomness of who lives and who doesn't, and not knowing why: The road to death is a long march beset with all evils, and the heart fails little by little at each new terror, the bones rebel at each step, the mind sets up its own bitter resistance and to what end? Eva is a feminist campaigning for voting rights for women. Later that year, Porter was diagnosed with tuberculosis later amended to bronchitis and was institutionalized for two years. Pale Horse Pale Rider, the titular story is a semi-autobiographical account of Miranda's contracting the 1918 flu while working for a local newspaper in Boulder, CO with WWI in the background. For Miranda, love and companionship are not enough to bridge this divide; she walks about in a daze of misery and isolation, and the only moments of comfort and understanding come when she is unconscious—either in the realm of dreams, or in… Death surrounds Miranda. Of course, Porter, in point of fact, predates O'Connor, but I didn't think the story would have been out of place in Everything That Rises Must Converge. While I can't find anything specific to indicate that it is the same Miranda as in Old Mortality, I think there is enough to indicate so, and I would like to believe that it the same Miranda.
