India is a country that is particularly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change. The National Action Plan on Climate Change (NAPCC) is a comprehensive framework that outlines the actions that the Indian government is taking to address and mitigate the impacts of climate change.
The NAPCC was launched in 2008 and comprises eight missions that focus on specific areas such as renewable energy, energy efficiency, water, agriculture, and forestry. These missions aim to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and increase the resilience of the country to the impacts of climate change.
One of the key missions of the NAPCC is the National Solar Mission, which aims to increase the use of solar energy in the country. This mission aims to deploy 20,000 MW of solar power by 2022, and 100,000 MW by 2030. This will not only reduce the country's dependence on fossil fuels, but it will also help to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Another key mission of the NAPCC is the National Mission on Enhanced Energy Efficiency. This mission aims to improve the energy efficiency of the country's industries and buildings, which will help to reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. The mission also aims to promote the use of energy-efficient appliances and equipment, such as LED lights and energy-efficient air conditioning systems.
In addition to these missions, the NAPCC also includes a focus on adaptation and resilience. This includes initiatives to improve the resilience of vulnerable communities to the impacts of climate change, such as floods and drought, as well as measures to protect biodiversity and natural habitats.
Overall, the National Action Plan on Climate Change is an important framework for addressing the challenges of climate change in India. By implementing these missions and initiatives, the Indian government is working to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and increase the resilience of the country to the impacts of a changing climate.
India Announces Stronger Climate Action
While on one hand the officers are unwilling to give out details, on the other hand the budget heads and schemes are seeing constant changes which makes tracking very difficult. A Mid-term workshop was successfully convened on 15 March 2011 in New Delhi. The mission held trilateral discussions with senior officials of water resources department of the Government of Madhya Pradesh and also met representatives of the main sector agencies working on water resources management issues. Hundreds of hydel projects are being constructed or proposed in the fragile Himalayan states of Arunachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh and Sikkim — all reeling under a disastrous combination of extreme weather events and excessive construction of mega infrastructure. It assists its members and partners by providing loans, technical assistance, grants, and equity investments to promote social and economic development. Domestic Content Requirement provision for the procurement of component used in the solar power projects has remained a disputed step for foreign players who have often complained of discrimination against their manufacturers.
NATIONAL ACTION PLAN ON CLIMATE CHANGE
Synopsis Calling on people to adopt an environmentally conscious lifestyle that focuses on mindful and deliberate utilisation instead of mindless and wasteful consumption, PM Narendra Modi along with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in October launched Mission LiFE, a global plan of action aimed at saving the planet from the disastrous consequences of climate change. The TA has been designed to engage in strategic planning and the development of frameworks that will help meet India's needs for sustainable and robust water resources systems for climate change adaptation. This protocol contains various rules, sources regarding the funds, phrases, timelines and obligations. India updated its Nationally Determined Contribution NDC in August 2022, seven years after it first submitted its plans to fight climate change to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. The pro-active measures which are implemented in the action plan should be taken as a major step to challenge the severe consequences of climate change.
