Fra Giovanni, also known as Giovanni di Capistrano or John of Capistrano, was a Franciscan friar and preacher who was born in Italy in 1386. He was a contemporary of Saint Joan of Arc and played a significant role in the defense of Europe against the Ottoman Empire during the 15th century.
Fra Giovanni was known for his eloquent and powerful preaching, which often inspired his listeners to take up arms in defense of their faith and their homeland. He was a strong advocate for the use of military force to defend against the Ottoman Turks, who were threatening the Christian states of Europe at the time.

Giovanni Giocondo was a monk in the 1400s and early 1500s, who wrote this letter to a lady friend who was having a hard time — it was dated Christmas Eve, 1513. His work helped introduce the Italian Renaissance to French architectural styles. There are joys this Christmas, too. From 1408 to 1418 Fra Angelico was at the Dominican Convent of Cortona where he painted frescoes, now destroyed, in the Dominican Church. It is full of beauty beneath its covering.
