Devdas is a classic Indian novel by Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay, published in 1917. The novel has been adapted into numerous film and stage productions, and is considered one of the greatest works of Bengali literature. The story follows the life of the titular character, Devdas, and his relationships with the women in his life: Parvati (also known as Paro), Chandramukhi, and his childhood friend, Sumitra.

Devdas is the son of a wealthy Bengali landowner, and is sent to England for his education. When he returns to India, he is expected to marry Paro, his childhood sweetheart. However, Devdas is torn between his duty to his family and his own desires, and ultimately decides not to marry Paro. This decision sets off a chain of events that leads to Devdas's descent into alcoholism and self-destruction.

Parvati, or Paro, is Devdas's childhood sweetheart and the love of his life. She is a beautiful, intelligent, and strong-willed woman who is deeply in love with Devdas. However, her love for Devdas is not enough to overcome the societal barriers and class differences that stand between them. Despite her love for Devdas, Paro ultimately marries another man, hoping to find happiness and fulfillment in her new life.

Chandramukhi is a courtesan, or a high-class prostitute, who becomes a close friend of Devdas's. Devdas is drawn to Chandramukhi's beauty and intelligence, and she becomes a source of solace for him during his darkest moments. Despite her profession, Chandramukhi is a kind and compassionate woman who cares deeply for Devdas.

Sumitra is Devdas's childhood friend and confidant. She is a strong and supportive presence in Devdas's life, and is one of the few people who understands his feelings and struggles. Sumitra is also a foil for Paro, representing a more conventional and socially acceptable path for Devdas.

Each of these characters plays a crucial role in the story of Devdas, and their relationships with each other drive the plot forward. Devdas's love for Paro, his friendship with Chandramukhi, and his bond with Sumitra all shape his decisions and ultimately determine his fate. Together, these complex and multifaceted characters create a rich and engaging tale of love, loss, and self-discovery.
