I admit I am wary of the rewriting, reinterpreting or whatever the approach may be towards a new book based, in whichever fashion, upon a true, beloved classic. It is a clever structure in many ways, since this there is no need to retread the old ground â the events of Wuthering Heights are referred to but never analysed in detail. It's 2011, after the financial crisis, which hovers around the edges of the book like a ghost. Let me begin by stating that whilst I am of course familiar with the story I have never actually read the book, Wuthering Heights, of which this is an re-imagining, an 'off-spring' or a companion read if you will, in which the author tells the story from the point of view of the maid, Nelly Dean. Various examples of The Narrative Structure of Wuthering Heights and Heart of Darkness oration of the history of Wuthering Heights and Thrushcross Grange as seen through the eyes of Nelly Dean. She does not fail to mention that he has taken a Wuthering Heights Catherine Earnshaw and is the father of there daughter, Catherine Linton. Her relations with certain characters like Heathcliff, who she grew up with, may lead her to sway stories more into a more positive reflection of her. So, can it be appreciated by someone who has never read Wuthering Heights? Even Nelly, who is well-accustomed to Heathcliff's personality and dark moods is taken aback by the sudden change, so uncharacteristic of his usual temper --".

Another thing that calls her reliability into question is the response she has when those around her start to blame her for the problems of the book. She had not merely her native intelligence to draw upon. At other times, she's telling her version of what somebody else told her, too. What does the whip symbolize in Wuthering Heights? There are some parts where my heart went out to Nelly. Earnshaw shows up with Heathcliff.

Since the publication of Longbourn, it seems as though every fictional servant from literature is being hauled out from below stairs and forced to sing their song. Now I wonder how I could have been satisfied with only the original telling. Housekeeper Nelly Dean tells a multigenerational saga of wild weather and impossible love at Wuthering Heights and Thrushcross Grange. Now here is the babyish trash.

Any one who loves Wuthering Heights should definitely read this book. Black hair, or dark hair, symbolizes Wuthering Heights, the Earnshaw family, privilege thwarted or taken down in status, evil and devils, strength, passion, rejection of education, and the matching dispositions of Heathcliff and Cathy. She tries to portray herself as just a witness, not a perpetrator. Romanticism is based upon the ideas of subjectivity, inspiration and the primacy of the individual. The most interesting bit was actually the references to folklore, superstition and the fairytale Nelly's mother tells her near the beginning. . It's well written and reads like a 19th century novel and the author's detailed historical knowledge comes through.

I read the first 6 chapters, but wasn't finding it interesting. Perfect for book clubs. She explored a deeper story of Nelly than just a servant â she was an important part of the household, family and the lives around her. Nelly never really had a life of her own because she lived at Wuthering Heights all her life. I debated whether to rate this one 3 or 4 stars. Great book This book went from a slow burn to an all consuming fire that demanded I didn't put it down. .

Is Nelly an objective narrator? Case's companion to Bronte's classic was thoughtful and well-researched, with accurate character representations from the original. VERDICT Case's skilled reworking of Brontë's masterpiece is a fabulous companion to the original as well as a wonderful stand-alone read. It raises interesting questions about the foundlings of Victorian fiction, of which there are many. What are the most powerful symbols in Wuthering Heights? Most of all the characters around her start to realize she is a problem and start to blame for things. Everything is stored up in her memory.
