Gwyneth tries to become Dickie's ideal woman, to avoid asking him to settle down, but she cannot -- she wants the home and the family. And, although he shows an early ability to adapt to ambiguous situations, he doesn't seem to have planned out very much. Barry Pepper of the Crawl plays Ripley but despite being a great actor, the way the movie presents a more lighthearted take on the character feels off. Freddie shows up at Ripley's apartment looking for Dickie. But facing exile from the group, Ripley panics, kills Greenleaf and steals his identity. He trashes his golden boy image to play a psycho, so creepy it will make your skin crawl.

Ripley's ruse is threatened when he unexpectedly runs into Marge and her friend Peter Smith-Kingsley at the opera. The sub plot with Dickie's relationship with a local girl isn't in the book, which is a shame because it adds to his character. In the book, it's calculated and planned, though still done as an act of rebellion after Dickie rejects him. Matt Damon turns in one of the most effective performances I've ever seen in recent memories. And then there is the beautiful cinematography, and the brilliant music score, and the terrific costumes and locations that makes us feel like we're back in Italy in the 50's. We feel his love for Dickie Greenleaf -- we feel his frustration at being shut out of his life -- we feel the awkwardness of being trapped in a situation that was never intended.

Patricia Highsmith's Tom Ripley gets a deluxe reincarnation here, merit of the talented Mr. Jude Law makes Dickie almost deserving of his fate because of the way he adopts new friends and then discards them. And trust me, there are pieces. The first hour of the film almost plays out like some boys own gap year romantic adventure set on the sun-dappled shores of the late 1950's Italian coastline.

Out of the ordinary and easy to digest: I would recommend! Thus Damon's Ripley is a figure at once stolid and oddly absent - a white space of marble chin and ivory teeth. Other than that, this movie has the perfect tone and sense of doom. That's accurate for Europe, anyhow. He is a complete chameleon. Overall I'd definitely recommend this to anybody wanting a good drama set in some beautiful Italian locations.
