Willie Howard Mays, often referred to as "The Say Hey Kid," is widely considered one of the greatest baseball players of all time. Born on May 6, 1931 in Westfield, Alabama, Mays grew up playing baseball and other sports in his hometown. He attended high school in Fairfield, Alabama, where he excelled at both football and baseball.
After high school, Mays signed a professional contract with the Birmingham Black Barons of the Negro American League. He played for the Black Barons for two seasons before being signed by the New York Giants in 1950. Mays made his major league debut on May 25, 1951, at the age of 20. He quickly became one of the most exciting players in baseball, known for his incredible fielding ability, strong arm, and powerful hitting.
Mays played for the Giants for several seasons, leading the team to the World Series in 1954. In the decisive Game 1 of the series, Mays made one of the most iconic plays in baseball history when he made a spectacular over-the-shoulder catch while running towards the warning track at the Polo Grounds. The Giants went on to win the World Series that year, with Mays being named the series MVP.
Mays continued to play for the Giants until 1957, when he was traded to the San Francisco Giants. He played for the Giants for the rest of his career, retiring in 1973. During his 22 seasons in the major leagues, Mays was a 20-time All-Star, won two Gold Glove awards, and was named the National League MVP twice. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1979.
