Robert Seymour Bridges was an English poet and physician, who is best known for his role as the Poet Laureate of the United Kingdom from 1913 to 1930. He was born in Walmer, Kent, in 1844, and was the oldest of nine children. His father was a successful doctor, and Bridges followed in his footsteps by studying medicine at Oxford University.
Bridges began writing poetry at an early age, and his first published poem appeared in the Oxford Magazine in 1866. He continued to write poetry throughout his career as a physician, and his work was highly respected by his peers. In 1873, he published his first collection of poetry, "The undiscovered country", which was well received by critics.
Bridges' poetry was characterized by its formal structure and its use of traditional forms, such as the sonnet and the ode. He was deeply influenced by the work of John Milton and William Wordsworth, and his poetry often explored themes of nature and the human experience.
Bridges was appointed as the Poet Laureate in 1913, following the death of Alfred Austin.
