The New Yorker's editor from 1952 to 1987, rejected several as too explicit. It was a big mistake to read this first. I wasn't too impressed with this one. Still with that prim look she lifts a folded dollar bill out of the hollow at the center of her nubbled pink top. Girls in swimsuits come into a grocery store, the cashier thinks they're hot, the manager asks them to cover up, and the cashier quits his job on their behalf with the hopes of impressing them.

Stokesie: Sammy's married co-worker who hopes to be manager one day. In this sense, they are artifacts of their historical eras, showing how national leaders shape and define their times. The misogyny and racism was hard to endure even for six pages. Lengel comes in from haggling with a truck full of cabbages on the lot and is about to scuttle into that door marked MANAGER behind which he hides all day when the girls touch his eye. Updike is notably unmodern in his impermeability to silence and the interruptions of the abyss. Basically, the first thing I wondered when I started reading was, "I wonder if I will find this story misogynist? This was easily one of the worst short stories that I have ever read. It is very difficult to write a short-short story and make it spectacular.

The sheep pushing their carts down the aisle -- the girls were walking against the usual traffic not that we have one-way signs or anything -- were pretty hilarious. Fancy Herring Snacks flashed in her very blue eyes "Girls, I don't want to argue with you. It's not as if we're on the Cape; we're north of Boston and there's people in this town haven't seen the ocean for twenty years.

The girls felt embarrassed and left the store. And Sammy is not a reliable narrator. He muses how ''hard the world was to be'' to him after the debacle at the store. A bit dull plot wise, but written engagingly enough that I wasn't too bored. There was this chunky one, with the two-piece -- it was bright green and the seams on the bra were still sharp and her belly was still pretty pale so I guessed she just got it the suit -- there was this one, with one of those chubby berry-faces, the lips all bunched together under her nose, this one, and a tall one, with black hair that hadn't quite frizzed right, and one of these sunburns right across under the eyes, and a chin that was too long -- you know, the kind of girl other girls think is very "striking" and "attractive" but never quite makes it, as they very well know, which is why they like her so much -- and then the third one, that wasn't quite so tall.

I actually really liked this story. And also the protagonist standing up for these girls at the end of the story and quitting his job wasn't something heroic for me, it simply felt like he was performing to get the admiration of those girls. He tells those girls that that place is not a beach in a way of educating of educating them and letting them know that they are not wearing proper attire. Although he is afraid that he may get a bad reputation and disappoint his parents, he quits his job in support of the girls. It comes out of the gate at a run. He's been a friend of my parents for years. Once Sammy gives Queenie her change, the girls quickly leave the store.

This isn't the absolute worst short story I have ever read; there may be underlining messages concerning consumerism and feminism. Sammy definitely falls into the category of naive, entitled boy - he's surprised when the girl he's dubbed Queenie doesn't speak the way he thinks she should, and is then further disappointed when the girls aren't waiting around to shower him with adulation when he quits his job because of an injustice he perceives against them.

Ultimately, Sam realizes that he must make his own way, but also that it doesn't always yield the rewards he'd like when there's no one to thank him for quitting his job on the girls' behalf. Eventually they're mistreated, and our narrator doesn't like it at all. Lengel responds that he doesn't want to argue and advises them to cover up their shoulders next time, as it's the store policy. At the start of the story, Sammy is a typical 19-year-old working at a grocery store. However, whatever messages there may have been are lost in the completely dull delivery that is this story.

While his quitting may have been a genuinely honest act in what he saw as public shaming of three young women, Sammy is not immune to the consequences of losing his job, and doesn't seem to think through his plan. What the others want is juvenile delinquency All this while, the customers had been showing up with their carts but, you know, sheep, seeing a scene, they had all bunched up on Stokesie, who shook open a paper bag as gently as peeling a peach, not wanting to miss a word. So I don't really disparage that. Sammy proceeds to deduce many things about the girls as he watches them, such as the fact that Plaid has just gotten her suit, since her belly is far less tanned than the rest of them. I have never read him before.

The bow tie is theirs, if you've ever wondered. Good for the girls. It is, but in that frustrating way where it's standing up for something too. Wood both praised and criticized Updike's language for having "an essayistic saunter; the language lifts itself up on pretty hydraulics, and hovers slightly above its subjects, generally a little too accomplished and a little too abstract".
