A society that labels is indifferent. It is a devastating idea that this young man will die due to a symbol. Andy was wearing a bright purple jacket. The contents of the box are superimposed by the label. Andy died for the sins of the gang. Each of the visitors to the alley where Andy lies either walks away or does not see him at all. His box is his jacket and his label is ''gang member.
In contrast, labels create stereotypes, and stereotypes result in indifference to individuality. There are three separate incidences of people arriving to the scene who may get him to safety where he can be treated for his knife wound, but to no avail. In our story, a young man is bleeding out and we see at least two clear incidents of possible saviors for him. Even though Andy nodded yes for him to call the cops, the man let it go and eventually left him alone. Andy is draped in purple, and the reader is witness to his suffering.
The other characters, symbolizing the larger society, only see the label printed across Andy's back, and based on that information, they were ''deaf'' to the real Andy. They do seem to feel some, since there's hesitation when Freddie kneels by Andy's side to see how he is, but when they realize he's a Royal, their fear of the rival gang and ideas of their own self-preservation keep them from giving him any aid.
Why did he make the decision to identify himself as a Royal? He suddenly realizes that it seems ''very important to him that he take off the purple jacket. That draw to get involved is a feeling of social responsibility. Students identify the conflicts in the story and find the most prominent way. He does not panic, even when he admits to himself that he is dying. They all ignored us, encouraged the other kids or seen us struggling and decided not to do anything about it.
