His mother started to alienate everyone in the family—not just Dave—and one day, they got in the car and drove Dave's father to a motel. Dave told his father that she had stabbed him, but he did not do anything about it.
The next thing David knows his mother is trying to staunch the blood flowing from his chest. Without his father as a potential buffer, David loses all hope and prays his mother will just end his misery quickly. Mother treats the wound with gauze and then orders Dave to resume doing the dishes. Pelzer later served in the military. David never finds anything she sends him to look for—ever. The next day, Mother goes to the principal, carrying her baby, Russell.

There, he begins stealing food from his classmates again, while also stealing from the store. He steals food from his peers, and later from a nearby grocery store. He inhales the fresh air and savors the moment before he kneels down and gives his son, Stephen, a hug. It slipped from her hands and stabbed him in the stomach, and he was seriously injured. Mother takes her children on special outings when Father is working, and the family goes on vacations, which are fun and memorable. The second and last time she force-feeds him the ammonia, his father again passively watches. This caused Pelzer to act out growing up.
I even despised the sun, for I knew I would never be able to play in its warm presence. They play and enjoy themselves for those few glorious days. He is forced to lay naked in a bathtub of cold water for hours, head submerged. Paraphrased, Pelzer said in the afterword of his book that his objectives for his story was to show how a parent can become abusive and how the human spirit can triumph and survive. Mother takes Dave to the hospital, falsely claiming that Dave fell out of bed.
One day when he forgets what he is looking for, his mother smashes him in the face, causing a bloody nose.
