The Talented Mr. Ripley is a psychological thriller directed by Anthony Minghella and starring Matt Damon, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Jude Law. Based on the novel of the same name by Patricia Highsmith, the film tells the story of Tom Ripley (Damon), a young man who is drawn into a web of deceit and murder while trying to live the high life in 1950s Italy.
The film opens with Tom being hired by the wealthy Mr. Greenleaf (Philip Seymour Hoffman) to go to Italy and bring back his son, Dickie (Law), who has been living a carefree life in the Mediterranean. Tom is eager to take on the task, as it offers him the opportunity to escape his mundane life and rub elbows with the rich and famous. However, things take a turn for the worse when Tom arrives in Italy and discovers that Dickie is not interested in returning home.
As Tom tries to persuade Dickie to return to the United States, he becomes increasingly envious of Dickie's carefree and privileged lifestyle. This envy eventually leads Tom to hatch a plan to kill Dickie and assume his identity. As he tries to pull off this deception, Tom must also deal with Dickie's suspicious girlfriend, Marge (Paltrow), and a host of other complications that arise along the way.
One of the standout performances in The Talented Mr. Ripley is Matt Damon's portrayal of Tom Ripley. Damon perfectly captures the character's sense of desperation and his desire to escape his mundane life. He is equally convincing as the charming and charismatic Tom, as well as the cunning and manipulative killer. Gwyneth Paltrow and Jude Law also give strong performances as Marge and Dickie, respectively, bringing depth and complexity to their characters.

Almost all the actors were coming off of big hits when this movie came out, and every cast members great acting abilities are showcased. Easy and fast read because it's intresting. Tom murders one last time as the movie ends. Tom pretends to meet Dickie by chance and tells him they knew each other in college. The only character that was well developed was Dickie Jude Law. His cumbersome gauchness contrasts beautifully with co-star Law's cool, casual, insouciance as Dickie Greenleaf, lolling on his Riviera deck-chair as if the world owes him a living. However the film is elevated by Damon's captivating performance and the rest of the cast.
The film is a masterpiece of tense situations, great characterisation and professional film-making. The telling of the story fell flat and robbed this film of its real potential. As we watched Marion Crane's car pause in the swamp and waited breathlessly, perversely hoping it would sink and allow Norman's mother to get away with murder, so too we watch Tom Ripley descend into darkness, and when the cops arrive at his hotel, we wait breathlessly with Tom, hoping he will get away. That's when Tom killed Dickie. Matt Damon plays the role of the talented Mr. Story involves Matt Damon staring as a poor working class who borrows a Yale or was it Harvard letter jacket to play the piano at a party for some rich snobs.
The Talented Mr. Ripley Movie Review: Supporters Carry the Show
That, coupled with the fact that as the movie progresses, Mr. See it for the performances and visuals. I am not sure I would have liked it so much if I hadn't watched the movie first though, as part of the fun was comparing the differences between the two. The strongest part of the film is probably it's strong casting with almost all the characters were aptly perfect for their roles and did a terrific work. Here you can see Peter wearing a dark olive green Tom and Peter wearing very similar dark outfits. This has tones of blue and brown, which pick up the color of my tie as well as my socks, which are also from Fort Belvedere and you can find them in our shop here just like the pocket square.
The book was written nicely, flowed well, and at times I didn't want to put it down. They needn't have worried. Tom Ripley is a bit of a non-entity but also a bit of a chameleon who can make people think he belongs. It's a mildly interesting crime driven character study taking place in a beautiful location: Italy. There are honorable mentions to Philip Seymour Hoffman, Gwyneth Paltrow and Cate Blanchett.

I felt swindled; brought in under the wrong pretext. There are considerable differences between the movie and the book. . He is not one to blanch at such a necessity. By the end, he is a total sociopath with no guilt at all. The film points out that we cannot run from our own darker half.
`The Talented Mr. Ripley': Carnal, Glamorous and Worth the Price
I did believed in Gwyneth Paltrow's qualm, totally. When it does, in the deadly encounter that sends Tom Ripley into his new life, the film changes greatly in tone. Somehow, then, he manages to convince the Italian police, Marge, Mr. But the biggest reason it came up short was because the motivation of Ripley Matt Damon was left too ambiguous. For all the raves I've read about Matt Damon's performance, I found it rather uneven. Dickie wearing a dark blazer with white pants.
I have watched the movie adaption of this book one of my favs , I was excited to read the book and compare the differences between them, myself. I really love author Highsmith's writing, she writes in a way that flows well with no confusion to what is happening in the story. One of the best movies of the year. Sympathetic because in more than one ways he is like you and me. The last time would have had to of been when I saw: Match Point. Ripley, even if it does make the movie a bit more of an erotic thriller than you might have otherwise expected. We raised the question but never fully decided whether or not his first victim, Dickie Dickie?!? Ripley five years after writing " Hitchcock's film subtly suggested a homosexual feeling in the instigator, and Tom Ripley also seems to have feelings for Dickie Greenleaf--although narcissism and sexuality are so mixed up in his mind that Ripley almost seems to want to become Greenleaf so that he can love himself both Ripley movies have a scene of Ripley dressed in Dickie's clothes and posing in a mirror. Again, Highsmith writes openly and yet subtly about Tom's queerness, but those of use who have learned to read between the lines clearly recognize Tom as gay gay gay. Some of the supporting performances fall short of Matt Damon and Jude Law's brilliance, but they're still quite memorable. It appears from the critics they can't decide either crime drama, psychological thriller, take on class and gender.
