The novel follows Adam as he grows from a boy into a man, facing the challenges and dangers of life during this tumultuous period in history.
The story begins on the morning of April 19, 1775, as Adam awakens to the sound of gunfire and the realization that the colonies are at war with Great Britain. Despite his youth and lack of experience, Adam is determined to do his part in the fight for independence. He sets out to join the local militia and eventually finds himself on the front lines of the Battle of Lexington and Concord.
Throughout the novel, Adam grapples with the weight of responsibility and the moral complexities of war. He must come to terms with the loss of friends and loved ones, as well as the realization that not all of those fighting for the revolution are doing so for pure or noble reasons. I loved this book, staying up until 4AM to finish it. The second is the date of publication online or last modification online. So he said grace glaring across the table at the imaginary point where he placed God, and I always felt that God had the worst of it. For the truth theme, several conflicts have been noted in the first chapter, such as Moses' talking against superstition yet birching Adam seven times. Adam takes the water to his mother in the kitchen, who is beginning the dinner. After doing so, he comes home to overhear his parents designating him a man. Suddenly, Adam is awakened by Levi, who draws attention to a speedy rider that stops in the center of town.
Adam Cooper is a teenaged boy wanting to be taken seriously as a man. This is a coming of age story, but not your typical coming of age story that is a pleasantly ending teen novel. I could never figure out why she chose this particular book, except that it was about the Battle of Lexington, and she figured it would be good for us to read about an important event in American history. He leaves, jumps over a wall, and meets Solomon Chandler. His father reprimands him for everything.
Adam ran away from the shooting on Lexington Common when his father was killed. Before falling asleep he overhears his parents talking about the committee meeting. I also kept in back of my mind a picture of my father's rage if I came out with so much as a hint about going to sea. The British boy expects to be executed and cries. Then I went back and re-read "April Morning," which only increased my distaste for the book. Because of this news, arguments stir in the crowd on whether to muster the militia. Then he would have been sensible.
He didn't hold with bending his head, at grace or any other time, and when Granny once raised this point with him, he replied that one of the many differences between ourselves and Papists and High Church people—who were a shade worse than Papists—was that whereas the latter two sects cringed and groveled before the clay and plaster images they worshiped, we stood face to face with our God, as befitting what He had created in His own image. When I ate some of the raw meatstuff, she slapped my hand. I would also recommend "Power" by Fast. As if I wouldn't know that Cooper voice of yours anywhere! The empty chair was next to Granny. But mostly, the book is a dull, plodding story, filled with long-winded speeches by Moses Cooper, and long-winded narratives by Adam, philosophizing on this or that aspect of his life.
Vomiting and sobbing after the battle, he then returns home to be treated as the man of the house, against his wishes. The theme of nonviolence is based on Moses' belief in solving problems through arguments, rather than warfare. In April, 1775, the people of Lexington had been expecting such an attack for several months. Cousin Simmons and Moses Cooper are members of the local Committee of Correspondence, a network set up in the colonies to organize resistance to the British rule. This young adult novel takes place in twenty-seven very critical hours, when the characters of this story realize that all their dreams of independence from the British are about to begin.

This time Adam wants to shoot to keep his mind off what he has just seen, and does, though he merely hits someone with bird shot. Simmons had been appointed to make a statement on the rights of man that they would all sign and send to Boston. Although there were only five of us in the immediate family, our table was always set with places for six, Mother at one end, Father at the other, Granny facing the two boys.

I take away one star because the Author misses a couple of decent chances at a history lesson for no particular reason. There the militia plans several ambushes and Adam shares his story of the massacre on the Lexington green. Most folks are not dissenters, and most folks would just as soon find a chain to put around their necks, considering one wasn't there already. As a 7th grader, I could barely wade through it.
