AWAY
Gwen has an opinion and if she does not agree with something, she is not afraid to say so. To many the definition of an Australian voice will vary from opinion to opinion. This was so touching, even while meant to be funny in terms of the play, I think — for it plays with the multiple layers of truth and of mild dissembling that are meant as acts of love. This is evident in Away by Michael Gow which focuses on aspects of discovery including realisations within oneself which can uncover further perceptions of ourselves or others. Roy and Coral lost a son in the Vietnam was and Coral is still grieving for him. Required to study this play for English at school, a more detailed insight into the intentions of Gow and the ideas presented was given. The play fell flat and after reading it for the HSC, I've since given my copy away.

The texts studied reveal how discovery is challenging and takes time to rediscover who we really are.
. Adapting and being open to change can be an initial struggle but if not embraced and resisted it cannot only impact ourselves, but others around us. While some relationships were strained, others were becoming detrimental. Gow blends philosophical dialogue with humour, and the irony is sparkling. This is the child of the local head master — and, hardly surprisingly, the mother is yet to have gotten over this. The three mothers have much to worry about in relation to their children.
The most important task it serves consists of determining the general tone for the rest of the play. The use of language and stylistic devices influence the way Gow has been able to speak to the modern Australian audience. Here, Gwen opens her mind to the world and finds out that life is precious and easily lost, that people need to enjoy every moment in it. This was a lovely performance, by the way. It was a co-production with Queensland Theatre Company and Griffin Theatre Company. This statement I feel is ridiculous and when I have finished this essay you will agree. Intertwining the characters of the movie are the concepts of grief and loss. These ideas differ for all individuals as each has their own experiences and develops from them in unique and personal ways. All their life, these boys are used to following strict orders from their parents and doing exactly as they are told. On a journey, an individual experiences a range of obstacles, either expected or unexpected, which shapes their life.

Keating, an English teacher at the fictional Welton Academy, had on his students during his short stay and stresses to his students that they could make decisions that will cultivate positivity in their lives. There's a budding cross-class romance, parents grieving a son killed in Vietnam, mental illness and physical illness, all effecting character's behaviour, as well as snobbishness and racism. This technique is especially useful for emphasising the social "gap" between Gwen and Tom's family. Gow's setting is a real environment that requires self reflection. The three families go off on summer holidays — all go off to various beach locations — the school principal to the Gold Coast think Florida , the parents with the daughter to a caravan park with their van and the English family to a relatively local beach with a tent that leans against their car. Gow has recreated scenes from the Shakespeare play Twelfth Night , in the opening scene of Away, and The Tempest, in the closing scene of Away. This treatment helped Coral realise there is life after the death of her son.
