The First Stone by Don Aker is a powerful and poignant novel about the complexities of human relationships, the power of forgiveness, and the importance of standing up for what is right.
The novel follows the story of Jamie, a high school student who is struggling to come to terms with the recent death of his mother and the resulting strain on his relationships with his father and sister. As he navigates the challenges of grief and family dynamics, Jamie finds himself caught up in a web of lies and deceit when he witnesses a group of boys bullying and harassing a classmate, Shannon.
Despite the risks to his own safety and reputation, Jamie decides to stand up for Shannon and report the incident to the school authorities. This decision sets off a chain of events that leads to the uncovering of a deep-seated culture of bullying and abuse at the school, and ultimately forces Jamie and those around him to confront the harsh realities of their own actions and choices.
One of the most compelling aspects of The First Stone is the way it delves into the inner lives and motivations of its characters. Aker does an excellent job of creating fully-realized, three-dimensional characters who are struggling with their own demons and insecurities. Jamie's journey from self-doubt and inaction to courage and self-acceptance is particularly moving, and the supporting characters are equally well-developed and believable.
Ultimately, The First Stone is a thought-provoking and poignant exploration of the human experience. It tackles difficult themes such as grief, abuse, and the importance of standing up for what is right with sensitivity and nuance, and ultimately leaves the reader with a sense of hope and the belief that even in the darkest of times, it is possible to find the strength and courage to heal and move forward.
The First Stone by Don Aker
Reef is the orphan no one wants and Leeza is the girl who wants to keep going. Don Aker has been one of my favorite authors for as long as I can remember. Throughout the novel Reef, the main character, shows how he changed his personality. I'll forever love this book for so many reasons! And after several long boring court hours. The First Stone is solid YA fiction, the kind, where you want to punch the characters in the face. Not to many happy moments occur throughout this story, and the ones that did were cut short.
Predictable, wasn't too impressed with the ending, but I did like the characters. He was also brain washed all throughout his childhood. And after he meets Leeza. He pulls sympathy and compassion from the reader and encourages the realistic need for second chances. Frank showed Reef what it was like to have someone care for him; the primary reason Reef turned out to be a person who was influenced by other bad people, is because he never had anyone who cared for him except for his Nan, who later passed away. I thought, was he even human? Lizza, short f ALERT Whole story plot and comments ALERT This book was slow to start with. It makes you feel more alone.
One stone can do so much damage. Initially, Reef had to go and talk to students about his experience and what he learned from it, but after he was done his sentence, he still kept going to schools to share his story. He was heading in the right direction finally. And after talking and sharing. And I can't say I blame Leeza's mother either. Fortunately no one was killed, but a girl named Leeza was severely hurt. As always with YA, I was scared of the ending, but it was OK.
The person in the car was Liza a teenage girl who was driving to get the death of her sister off her mind. Everyone expects Reef to have harsher consequences, but the judge sends him to North Hills group home. Reef has these two friends that before this accident were his best friends. The man apperes to go away. I would say there is a little bit of stuff that's a hard read, like when in court they explain the image that was shown of Liza's car and how it was just a crumpled piece of metal, which is difficult for anyone I imagine, lot's of swearing as well. I didn't realize this story took place in Canada specifically Halifax, Nova Scotia until I started reading. Alex is another boy who is living with Reef at the group home.

After throwing one stone that almost kills some girl. Recommended by my 17 year son and I'm glad that I listen to him. Reef and Leeza never become friends, and I can understand that, but Reef really did turn his life around. Ultimately, Reef can and will change and even makes up for his actions, and has redemption. I do know that the author created a sequal but I had to read this for my 10th grade English class so idk if I'll read the second book. It is a beautiful story.
Don Aker's The First Stone is a story about a troubled teenage boy named Reef and a teenage girl in mourning from the death of her sister and both people are thrust together by fate. It caused near a six car pile up. Ironically, Reef is the key to Leeza's recovery, and vice versa. But when forced to public service at a hospital Reef and Liza cross paths, which could have huge repercussions. And after that stupid judge makes him move to yet another foster home, school, and has him volunteer at this lame rehab place, all just for probation.
Awsome writer Possible Spoilers. These events helped him to become who he aspired to be but they also played a huge role in his downfall. He was not only making A and B honor roll freshman year, but he was in love with basketball, and his friends. The thing I felt so horrible about throughout the book was the obliviousness they had, the fact they didn't know who each other really were. It is a story of teenagers who just have bad luck.
The writer skips to the person Reef hit that day. After throwing one stone that almost kills some girl. Her only surviving daughter was almost killed, and he This book was pretty awesome, I have to admit. For instance, he was anxious about if the girl he injured was okay before he was sentenced to his punishment. Also he has to pick a place to help people.
