His idiosyncrasy remains loving and understanding, even when his younger son returned home after many of been away with not a penny to his name. At the very start of the novel, Hanna is a brilliant and talented young girl whose life revolves around a Piano Forte. This was evident through how she helped Jamal, Bibi and Omar survive the boat trip. Although, Joe has been brought up in a very difficult childhood by many tragedies he continues to find the best of the situations and carry on with a positive attitude.
